Marine Corps Base Quantico is a near 59,000 acre military installation
located in Northern Virginia. It has lands in parts of Stafford, Prince
William, and Fauquier counties. The entire base is comprised of a variety of
habitats including hardwood, hardwood and pine mixed stands, grasslands,
timber harvest pine stands, oak savannah, and has vast stretches of stream
corridors throughout.
The area of Quantico located east of I-95 is known as "Mainside" and is
between 5,000 and 6,000 acres. Mainside is where most of the office
buildings on the installation are located. Quantico provides housing for
1,100 military families on this side of base as well.
Forested areas are comprised mostly of mature hardwood forests, with a few pine stands throughout. This area is bordered by the Potomac River and two large creeks (Quantico Creek and Chopawamsic Creek) that empty into the Potomac.
